Florida International University has launched the FIU Cruise Excellence Center, led by its Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management. The center begins with a Cruise Executive Advisory Board including presidents, CEOs, a CFO and other senior leaders from cruise lines, travel distribution, destinations and maritime services. It will focus on cruise-industry research, talent development, executive education and innovation. For FIU students, the initiative is intended to expand curriculum, internships, experiential learning and micro-credentials connected to cruise careers.
Industry Board Sets Priorities
Board members will help identify industry challenges, set research priorities and connect university expertise with the global cruise community. The center’s initial work combines research, education and industry collaboration.
Jeanette M. Nuñez, president of FIU, said:
“The launch of the FIU Cruise Excellence Center signifies an historic partnership right here in Miami, the Cruise Capital of the World, and offers FIU an opportunity to engage with an industry that has enormous importance to our region and to the global economy. The Center creates a strong nexus between expertise from across FIU with industry leadership to help develop talent, generate meaningful research, and contribute to the future of cruising.”
Research and Education Plans
Potential research areas include the future cruise workforce, consumer demand, artificial intelligence, environmental responsibility, crew well-being, ports, destinations, logistics and supply chains. FIU already offers an undergraduate Cruise Line Management track and a Master of Science in Hospitality Management specialization in Cruise Line Operations.
Michael Cheng, dean of FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, said:
“The Chaplin School will serve as the academic lead for the Center connecting the right FIU expertise and discipline across the university to the questions industry leaders bring forward resulting in more relevant research, a richer curriculum, and offering students experience working across the boundaries they will encounter in their careers.”
Student Career Pathways
The center’s long-term objective includes identifying future skill requirements, strengthening curricula and creating clearer links between education and careers across the cruise sector. Its plans also include executive education, professional education and specialized micro-credentials.
Larry Pimentel, FIU Distinguished Cruise Executive-in-Residence and chair of the Cruise Executive Advisory Board, said:
“This is intended to be a working partnership, not an advisory board in name only. Our opportunity is bigger than creating another academic center. It is to build a resource for the global cruise industry that is relevant, independent, connected and useful — one that brings together industry experience, academic rigor and the next generation of talent.”
Center Connects Study and Industry
Students can find further information through the FIU Cruise Excellence Center website. The center is designed to give students access to industry insights, learning opportunities and career connections in the global cruise sector.
