Privacy policy
Studying with Academic Writing Club is anonymous by default. Below: the one kind of personal data we keep, why, for how long, and what you may ask of us.
The person in charge
Tobias Hutchins, our editor, controls the personal data described on this page. Reach him at editor@academicwritingclub.com; we have no office or postal address, so email is the only channel.
What we keep
Only emails. A student, a tutor, a university press office or anyone else who writes to the editor gives us their message, their name and their email address. We save those so we can reply, check a correction, or come back to a pitch later.
Browsing leaves nothing with us. We use no visitor analytics, there are no student logins or profiles, no comment boxes and no advertising networks. We will never sell, rent or hand over anyone's details for marketing.
Why we are allowed to
UK data protection law lets a publication keep correspondence where it has a legitimate interest in answering it; that is our basis. Should visit counting ever be switched on, it will wait for each reader's consent, and you will see it described here beforehand.
How long emails stay
Two years after the latest message in a thread, we delete it. The exception is a thread about a correction or a story that has not been settled yet; that one waits until it is. Ask and we will delete yours earlier.
Outside companies
- Vercel runs the servers that deliver our pages. As part of keeping them working and secure, it logs basic request details such as an IP address and which address was opened, and discards those logs after a short period.
- Google Search gets your query if you type into the search form on our missing-page screen; Google's privacy terms cover what happens next.
Both firms can handle data on servers in the US. Such transfers rely on safeguards that UK law treats as adequate.
Requests you can make
Ask us to show you the data we have about you, correct it, erase it, pause or object to its use, or send it to you in a portable file; any consent you gave can also be withdrawn. Send the request to editor@academicwritingclub.com and expect an answer inside a month.
You may also take a complaint to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK regulator: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, telephone 0303 123 1113. Talking to us first often solves it sooner.
