Slippery Rock University has launched its first comprehensive fundraising campaign in more than 30 years, targeting $35 million by the end of 2028. The public phase of “Because this is The Rock” began Oct. 23 after nearly $20 million was raised during its first two quiet-phase years. The campaign will direct $15 million to academic excellence and innovation, $12 million to scholarships, $5 million to athletics and $3 million to a Presidential Priority Fund. The funding plan includes scholarship support, research, academic programs, experiential learning and facilities.

Four Funding Priorities

Academic Excellence and Innovation investments will support faculty and student research, academic programs, experiential learning and facilities. Scholarship funding will address financial barriers to accessing and completing college, while athletics funding will support student-athlete scholarships, facilities, coaching, travel and mentorship across SRU’s 19 varsity sports.

Approximately 85% of SRU students receive financial aid, and the University distributed more than $10.1 million in scholarships during 2024-25. The Presidential Priority Fund is intended to support emerging opportunities, new ideas and programs that advance the University’s mission.

Building On The Strategic Plan

The campaign is rooted in SRU’s strategic plan, introduced in 2024. It follows more than three decades in which the University grew without a comprehensive campaign at this scale.

Karen Riley, President at Slippery Rock University, said:

“This campaign marks an exciting new chapter for Slippery Rock University and the impact we can make together. We are at an inflection point, ready to build on our success and advance lasting excellence. Through this effort, we can further invest in the people, programs and priorities that will shape the future of The Rock and make a difference in the lives of generations of students.”

Ways To Participate

SRU is inviting alumni, friends, faculty, staff, students and other community members to participate through philanthropy, volunteer leadership, advocacy, mentorship, internships and career opportunities. Information about the campaign and online giving is available at because.sru.edu.
