Remi Newman, a former New City College student, has been named Edmundson Apprentice of the Year 2026 by the Electrical Contractors’ Association. Newman is now an electrical apprentice with Essex Services Group Ltd after studying Level 2 Electrical Installation at New City College’s Rainham Construction and Engineering Centre. Her national award follows a London-wide Female Electrician of the Year competition in 2022, where she competed against 10 other female trainees and tradeswomen. The competition led sponsor ESG to offer her an apprenticeship.

From Competition To Apprenticeship

Newman won the London-wide competition at Lewisham College during an International Women’s Day event in 2022. She impressed judges through several challenging tasks, and the apprenticeship has allowed her to gain on-site experience while developing her electrical skills.

Newman has spoken about challenging outdated perceptions of women working in traditionally male-dominated trades.

National Recognition

The ECA award recognizes Newman’s technical ability and commitment to developing her skills in the electrical industry. ESG representatives celebrated alongside her as she received the accolade.

Stephanos Yohannes, Construction Manager and Apprentice Mentor at ESG, said:

“I feel truly privileged to have had the opportunity to support Remi throughout her apprenticeship journey. Watching her grow, develop and achieve what she has is something everyone is incredibly proud of. It is a huge moment for all of us, and Remi thoroughly deserves it.”

Skills Development

Newman’s award follows her progress from the All-Female Competition at Lewisham College to an apprenticeship at ESG.

Bob Noseda, Sector Skills Advisor, said:

“Well done to Remi and everyone involved in her development. It all started when she won the All-Female Competition at Lewisham College. I remember delivering Remi’s pre-employment assessment at ESG and being extremely impressed by her marks. She has excellent all-round skills and deserves this award.”
