The Lowe’s Foundation has launched the Building Futures Skilled Trades Coalition with more than 75 organizations, including NVIDIA, AT&T, Bank of America, Carrier, General Motors, DEWALT and Duke Energy. The coalition aims to train and develop one million people for skilled trades careers by 2035. Its members include educators, businesses, workforce organizations and industry vendors. The foundation’s existing Gable Grants program works with 73 community colleges and nonprofits across 30 states.
Workforce Gap
An estimated 2.1 million skilled trades jobs could go unfilled by 2030, according to the Department of Education, creating potential economic losses of up to $1 trillion annually.
The coalition will focus on changing perceptions of trades careers, expanding training and credentialing programs, and measuring progress from training to employment.
Marvin Ellison, Chairman and CEO at Lowe’s, said:
“The next industrial revolution won’t be built by algorithms alone. It will be built by the millions of skilled trade professionals who power, connect and move this country forward.”
Training And Career Pathways
The coalition plans to connect training providers with employers across construction, automotive manufacturing, telecommunications, energy, HVAC, technology and financial services. The Lowe’s Foundation recently expanded its mission to train and develop 250,000 tradespeople by 2035 through a $250 million investment.
Brian Moynihan, Chair and Chief Executive Officer at Bank of America, said:
“We are helping create opportunities for more skilled trades careers to build the talent needed to strengthen local economies and help drive American prosperity and competitiveness.”
Founding Members
Other founding members include the National Association of Home Builders, the National Center for Construction Education and Research, SkillsUSA and Carhartt. The coalition says additional members, commitments and progress updates will be announced as implementation begins.
Jim Tobin, President and CEO at the National Association of Home Builders, said:
“NAHB is proud to be a founding member of the Building Futures Skilled Trades coalition. A skilled, capable workforce is critical to meeting our nation’s housing needs. Our collective commitment to invest in the next generation of skilled trade professionals will help strengthen the workforce pipeline, transform lives and build communities.”
