The ERANDA Rothschild Foundation has given the London School of Economics and Political Science £3 million to fund three new undergraduate scholarships each academic year in perpetuity. The awards will support UK students from groups most under-represented in higher education throughout a three-year degree. The endowment is named for Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, the Foundation’s late chairman, who died in 2022 aged 91. For students applying to LSE, the program creates a continuing source of support rather than a time-limited fund.
Three Scholarships Each Year
The gift will enter LSE’s permanent endowment, allowing the scholarship awards to renew each year. Each recipient will receive support for a three-year undergraduate program.
Students will be eligible through eight departments: Economics, Economic History, Management, Government, Social Policy, Finance, International Relations, and Geography and Environment.
Longstanding LSE Support
The Foundation has supported LSE since 1974 through scholarships, campus redevelopment and academic-led projects. Sir Evelyn served on the School’s Court of Governors from 1968 to 2010 and later became an Emeritus Governor.
He also served on the advisory board of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment from its founding in 2008.
Education Giving Record
The Foundation previously gave £500,000 in 2015 to establish Sir Evelyn de Rothschild Scholarships in War Studies at King’s College London, supporting 25 students over five years. It has also supported junior research fellowships at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
Since its founding in 1967, the Foundation has given more than £74 million to charitable causes. The LSE endowment directs part of that giving toward undergraduate access on a permanent basis.
