Georgia College & State University ranked No. 4 among public colleges and universities in the Regional South in the 2027 Best Colleges list from U.S. News & World Report. The Milledgeville, Georgia, university was ranked among 152 public and private institutions across 12 states. It also placed No. 1 for best value for in-state students in Georgia and No. 2 for undergraduate teaching in the Regional South. The result follows its first Top 5 regional placement last year.

Ranking Gains Across Categories

Georgia College moved from No. 5 to No. 4 among top public schools in the Regional South. It rose from No. 2 to No. 1 for best value among public schools in Georgia, and from No. 5 to No. 2 for undergraduate teaching in the region.

The university was also ranked No. 7 among the region’s most innovative schools and No. 1 among public schools in Georgia in that category. Its overall regional university ranking was No. 14, while its business, nursing, psychology, and computer science programs each ranked No. 1 in Georgia among the listed public institutions.

Enrollment And Class Size

Applications have increased by more than 75% since 2022, reaching a record high in April 2026 of more than 10,000 for the current academic year. The entering class of 2030 has nearly 1,850 first-year students, while total enrollment is almost 7,500 undergraduate and graduate students.

Despite enrollment growth, the university reports a 17:1 student-to-faculty ratio, and three out of four classes have fewer than 30 students. For students studying now, those figures point to smaller classes alongside a larger incoming cohort.

Research And Student Outcomes

Students can take part in mentored undergraduate research, including the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates program. The university also reports that its Pre-Med Mentoring Program has had a 100% medical school placement rate for each of the past 16 years.

Jude Doredant, junior physics and mathematics major at Georgia College, said:

“It was challenging for some students [from other universities] to get started with the research process because it was their first time in a lab setting, but I was ready because we get awesome opportunities at GCSU. I was able to begin immediately.”

A Record Regional Placement

The ranking gives Georgia College its second consecutive record-high placement in the Regional South. The university reported a $360 million economic impact on Middle Georgia, alongside its student enrollment and academic results.
