CIEE has opened three fellowship programs for the 2027 academic year, expanding study abroad and internship options for first-generation and Pell-eligible college students. The organization awards more than $13 million each year in grants and scholarships for study and internships abroad. The new and expanded options include 13 funded internships in Dublin, 12 internships in Copenhagen, and four $10,000 awards for study in Berlin. Students can apply before deadlines ranging from November 1, 2026, to January 8, 2027.

Funded Internships in Europe

The Douglass O’Connell Global Internship Program selects 13 Pell-eligible students each year for an eight-week internship in Dublin. The program includes funding, airfare, and a living stipend. Its sponsors are Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs, the African American Irish Diaspora Network, the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation, and CIEE. Applications close January 8, 2027.

The Scan Design Foundation Environmental Sustainability Internship will send 12 Pell-eligible students to Copenhagen for eight weeks of study and an internship with a company focused on environmentally sustainable business practices. Participants will also take part in networking and professional development activities. Applications close November 20, 2026.

Patrick Moran, Senior Vice President for College Study Abroad at CIEE, said:

“Few experiences rival the impact of a global internship for preparing students for life after graduation.”

Berlin Study Awards

The Knowledge Without Borders: Democracy and Memory Fellowship will award four first-generation, Pell-eligible students $10,000 each toward a CIEE Quarter In or CIEE Open Campus study abroad program in Berlin. Established in 2026 through a gift from Karen Collias, the fellowship is for students interested in history, political science, civic leadership, social justice, and global affairs.

Fellows will take courses on German history and Berlin’s cultural and political landscape. Applications for the Spring 2027 fellowship close November 1, 2026.

Access for Eligible Students

CIEE’s fellowships give eligible students routes into funded study and internship programs abroad, with options centered on career preparation, sustainability, and civic learning.

James P. Pellow, Ed.D., President and CEO at CIEE, said:

“We are committed to increasing access to all college students from all backgrounds, especially for first generation and underserved populations, to ensure that all students can experience and benefit from the powerful impact of studying abroad.”
