DC College Access Program reports that 85% of freshmen in its University Partnerships program continue to their sophomore year, while 57-100% graduate within five years. American University has become the nonprofit’s newest university partner for college-ready Washington, D.C., students. The partnership combines financial aid, coaching, and academic and socio-emotional support from enrollment through graduation. Eligible students can take an online eligibility survey from October 15 and apply in January 2027.

Financial Aid And Support

American University will work with DC CAP to combine DC CAP scholarships, Pell Grants, D.C. Tuition Assistance Grants, and institutional aid. The stated goal is to help D.C. students complete college with little to no debt while receiving support throughout their studies.

Jeremy Lowe, interim vice president of Undergraduate Enrollment Management at American University, said:

“Together with DC CAP, we're taking a critical next step toward closing the college opportunity gap for D.C. students. Washington, D.C. isn't just where American University is located, it's our home, and we have a responsibility to ensure that talented students across the District can see a path to an AU education. Our partnership with DC CAP strengthens that commitment by helping more D.C. students obtain access, afford, and ultimately thrive in college.”

University Partnership Results

DC CAP’s University Partners provide support from applications through degree completion. The organization reports that participating students graduate within five years at rates of 57-100%, or 3-5 times the national average.

Eric Waldo, executive director of DC CAP, said:

“For so many of our scholars, staying close to the community they grew up in matters, and having one of the nation's top universities just a short Metro ride away means they don't have to choose between a great education and home. We couldn't be more thrilled to be joining forces with American University. This partnership will help turn proximity into opportunity, and ensure that more students in the District can access the support they need to learn and thrive.”

Applying To The Program

Students interested in DC CAP programs can confirm their eligibility through a short online survey opening October 15. Applications open in January 2027 through the University Partners program.
